BERLIN — Still tapping your phone to unlock it? ZTE's Axon Elite lets you use your eyes, fingerprints and voice to unlock it instead.
The Chinese telecommunications company announced its latest Android smartphone on Thursday at IFA in Berlin.
Whereas the Axon Pro was designed in the U.S. specifically for the U.S. market, the Axon Elite is for the rest of the world — namely, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
The Elite's most alluring features involve unlocking it. There's a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device just below the secondary camera. But that's not all. The phone can also be unlocked via a scan of your eye or with your voice. How secure the last mode is, of course, unclear.
We've no idea how well the features work, so it's hard to gauge if they're truly useful or plain gimmicky. Still, we're hopeful it's not the latter.
Despite the "Elite" moniker, it's actually a step down from the Axon Pro, at least in terms of the display. The Elite has a 5.5-inch display, but it's 1,920 x 1,080 (full HD) resolution as opposed to 2,560 x 1,440 (QuadHD).
Inside, the Elite is running Android 5.0.2, it's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, packs 3GB of RAM and has a 3,000 mAh battery that supports QuickCharge. The phone will come with 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a microSD card up to 128GB.
On the back is same dual-camera setup as on the Axon Pro: 13-megapixel main camera and 2-megapixel secondary camera for depth sensing. On the front of the phone, you'll find an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The back camera can also record 4K resolution video.
It also looks like ZTE has replaced the Pro's top and bottom plastic back panels with a leatherette one — complete with Samsung's fake leather stitching, which was its signature design across its many products for a few years.
The Elite will be available in Ion Gold and will hit the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain through eBay for 419.99 euros ($470) on Sept. 24. It'll roll out to the other regions by the end of September.
